Chicha Morada, often translated as “Purple Brew,” traces its origins back thousands of years to the pre-Inca civilisations of the Andean region. The term “chicha” was used to describe ceremonial and everyday beverages made from maize, a sacred crop revered as a gift from the earth. Traditionally, these drinks were prepared by boiling and fermenting maize, then infusing it with fruit skins, herbs, and spices—methods passed down through generations.

Over time, Chicha Morada evolved into the non-alcoholic refreshment beloved across Peru today. Alongside Inca Kola, it remains one of the nation’s most cherished drinks, enjoyed in homes, celebrations, and traditional picanterías alike.
